Each student in my classroom has the opportunity to participate in Makerspace on Fridays. The focus of my Makerspace activities is the engineering design process. Students are given a task that needs to be completed (Examples: Build a miniature of anything in the building; construct a boat that actually floats; etc.). They are asked to work through the entire engineering design process during these activities. Currently, the students are designing on grid paper. However, with the purchase of these 3D printers, I will be able to increase the use of technology by showing the students how to use CAD software to create 3D representations of their designs. The ultimate thrill for the students will be the opportunity to print their designs on the 3D printer. Having something that they can physically hold in their hands will go a long way toward creating a drive for innovation and improvements in these students. Additionally, I can use these printers to make items that can be shared across grade levels with other teachers in the building, making this a project that can touch hundreds of kids each year.
