Multi-sensory rooms are special spaces within the school that allow students of all abilities to self-regulate, re-balance, and have their sensory needs met. Students bring diverse backgrounds of varying levels of environmental and emotional needs. Multi-sensory rooms sooth, calm, stimulate the senses. Students need various multi-sensory calming tools to aid them in self-regulation skills throughout the school day. Multi-sensory rooms prevent students from escalating behavior to the point of needing emergency safety interventions. The purpose of such a room is to provide students with pleasurable sensory experiences whether they are agitated or not. This room can be filled with activities such as textures, lights, sounds, and smells. The school's behavior specialist and Positive Scholar-Teacher Engagement (PSTE) support team will use this room to incorporate and teach a variety of positive behavior interventions and techniques to make sure that fewer students' behavior escalates.
