Being able to see problems from multiple perspectives and then learning how to solve those problems in a variety of ways is what we strive to get our students to do. Marvin Minsky, American scientist and co-founder of MIT's Artificial Intelligence program, once stated, "You don't understand anything until you learn it more than one way." That is what I want to see my students learn- that they may have solutions that I may not have thought of. Using the speed cubes will give my students manipulatives that will get their gears going. The chess sets will give my students opportunities to master skills not often learned in a regular classroom; and since some of my students attend our local chess center, I may be able to get those students to assist me in teaching some of those more difficult concepts.
