An important use of a balance beam is to create new opportunities for curriculum and instruction by bringing real-world problems into life for students to explore and solve. A balance beam can help to create an active environment in which students not only solve problems, but also find their own problems. Being on balance means having an even distribution of weight on each side of a vertical axis. The world is a balance beam for young children. Parents know that a simple walk down the street with their child may turn into an Olympic challenge as the child balances on street curbs and brick walls. Anywhere they go children are always looking for something to walk across.
