Reading is not just something we use to pass time in our classroom. We use mentor texts to help us become our best selves whether that is using a book to help us become better students, readers, writers, or using a book to help us know what to do in different social situations. Many units that are taught in my classroom deal with social emotional needs of my students and help to overcome certain situations. As a 3rd grade teacher in an ICT classroom with both special education and general education students it is important that students are exposed to different situations expressed in these multiple books. Many of my students are from low-income households in which they are not exposed to many educational lessons or social situations, therefore confronted with a problem they are unsure how to react. My students will learn not only academics from the books, but how to treat one another by reading and discussing these books as a class and with one another.
