Many of my students suffer from seizure disorders and they have one-to-one staff assistance with them at all times. When we go out into the community, we let our students explore retail stores, fitness centers, and grocery stores. If one of our students has a seizure while we are out in the community, the staff person with them will need to contact other staff quickly to get help. Using two way radios is the fastest way for a staff person to contact another staff person for help. We want our students to be able to explore their community as independently as possible without having to explore their community in a large group. As adults, we don't do many everyday life skills in a large group. When we go shopping, we like to look at things that interest us, we don't want to have to stay with a big group of people and see the things they want to see. If we had two way radios, our students would be able to explore stores in real-life scenarios.
