As we are an online school, students are required to show their work in order to show their understanding and mastery of the concepts covered. It is easy enough for anyone to type in a problem and have the software spit out the correct response. What makes math different in the spectrum of classical education, is that students understand the patterns and background that drives formulas. We have the technology to have them show their work, but we lack the technology required by many brick-and-mortar schools to enable students to be successful when it comes to using the modern technology required by the ACT and SAT. Graphing calculators will bridge the gap from classical to 21st Century learning for my students. We live in a test-driven society and my students need to have the tools to put them on an even playing field with their peers. The TI-Series calculators are the industry standard when it comes to graphing calculators and being familiar with the technology will enable their success in moving on to their next educational journey. Fifty TI series calculators will help standardize my online classroom community from the freshman level up to AP Calculus and AP Statistics. TI calculators will be used across all my subjects: Algebra 1 when students are introduced to linear regression. Geometry as they solve conditional probability. Algebra 2 when students work with z-score and graphing complex polynomials. AP Calculus when determining the behavior of functions. Finally, AP Statistics requires a calculator to perform the operation. We live in a 21st Century society and giving my students the best chance of success in using modern technology will benefit them not only in their school careers, but ultimately, in their chosen career paths as well.
