Our students LOVE to get their hands on instruments but are left in the dark when it comes to the string family. Ukulele's are a wonderful instrument to bring into the general music classroom. They give students and their families real hands-on experience with string instruments. Hands-on experiences with string instruments allow students to focus and connect with the feel and vibration of the strings, to practice ear training for finger placement, and to participate in peer coaching opportunities. Instrument units are already in place for our 4th-6th graders to learn about string instruments but we have been unable to complete these units due to the lack of instruments. With these 14 ukulele's, our 4th graders will learn about the string family, resonance, and how strings manipulate pitch. 5th graders will learn major scales, chords, chord progressions, and accompaniments as we work through a full 9 lesson curriculum accumulating in a ukulele performance. The 6th graders will also use the ukuleles to understand how to read TABS and compose their own string piece. The greatest joy in being able to complete a string unit is the opportunity to share our learning with our families and our community through community performances and school showcases. We anticipate being able to use these instruments to connect with our community for many years to come.
