It's so important to have hands-on activities for students to learn. Having items that students can manipulate is much more effective and can be a bridge between what's taught whole class and students being able to work independently. The materials I've asked for are intended to enhance lessons and connect students with concepts through visual aids. In my class, we have reading and math centers every day. I see centers as a great time to differentiate skills with students in small groups, as well have students working independently provided with exploratory items. With two sessions of centers during the day, I see a big opportunity with these materials to make my centers really meaningful for kids.
