Each Kindle will have an app that serves as a speech-generating device which will impact students' lives everywhere they go. They will be able to ask and answer questions, participate in the classroom activities and discussions, get help when they need it, tell jokes, talk with their friends, and so much more. They can communicate to caregivers when they are sick, cold, happy, afraid, or need to use the bathroom. Providing a voice to a child will give them confidence and independence which will stay with them forever. As my students learn to use their new voices, all members of the community (teachers, speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists) will be involved in modifying and using the speech generating devices to accommodate each student's needs. We will model the devices, use them as part of everyday life, and implement them into all aspects of the school day. The JVS community will assist parents in incorporating these devices at home as well. Each student’s voice will stay with them everywhere they go, changing their lives forever.
