Student engagement is so difficult when classrooms have so many different abilities and learning styles within their four walls. Yesterday's teaching strategies don't work with today's children. They live in a world of technology so why not use that technology to reach them where they are?
My student's small group experiences will be bolstered by the use of tablet apps, aimed at increasing their reading and math skills. When so much of their childhood is consumed by academics, they need opportunities to play and just be kids. The games/programs I intend to use will give them that opportunity. They see them as fun and don't even realize that they are learning.
When you need to reach a 4th grader who is reading on a 1st grade level, you need to do so in a way that doesn't make them feel bad about themselves. When you can target instruction for them that is fun and engaging, that 9 year old suddenly feels accomplished for beating the game--not deflated because they couldn't read the homework.
Please give me the opportunity to help these children increase their scores without increasing their stress. Let them play...and learn.
