According to psychological research, if practice does not make perfect, it makes better and faster. I would like to offer a secluded corner free of judgement of others for students to practice reading. Many of my students read up to 5 grade levels behind and shy away from reading aloud. I want them to have confidence when reading aloud and improve comprehension. My overall goal is for my students to compete academically and succeed in life. My students will benefit by enhancing their reading enjoyment, increasing comprehension, building their vocabulary and improving their writing skills. Students get the opportunity to learn the meanings of many new words in context. Students will be able choose their own materials for sustained silent reading by picking books of base on their interest. Silent reading provides effective practice since it is required to read silently for standardized tests. Most notably there is a well-established link between reading and writing. When students are engrossed in silent reading, they observe a variety of writing styles and sentence structures that influence their own writing styles. This establishes a much brighter future.
