The books that I am requesting will ensure that students see themselves and their culture reflected in our classroom community. All too often, children from marginalized populations do not see themselves represented in the books they read, which sends a powerful message about how they are valued in society. These messages transfer into the school community. Exposing all students to diverse children's literature will, not only, ensure students form marginalized populations feel seen, but will also ensure that students learn to work with all different kinds of people. A rich, diverse classroom library fosters student growth in literacy and in their overall understanding of the world they live in.
