For the children we work with, traditional books can feel overwhelming, however the kids who usually shy away from reading are given a second chance through Graphic Novels. While the plot lines are the same as those of traditional books, they are easier to read, and the sentence structure is less complicated. This is wonderful for students who are easily discouraged or have a processing disability in which paragraphs are hard to follow. Graphic Novels are the gateway book to literacy for new middle school readers. Graphic Novels are great for students because they offer a faced paced read for that does not overwhelm struggling readers with too many words or details. When a student is just learning to read, the pictures in Graphic Novels provide visual clues about the story. The ability to read these books helps build student confidence and improves their desire to read more. The popularity of graphic novels makes them a valuable tool for improving the reading level of below level readers. With over three hundred students our current circulation of Graphic Novel titles limits access to graphic novels in our school library. Students are consistently waiting for Graphic Novel titles to be returned and become available to check out. These new Graphic Novels will offer young readers more reading opportunities as well as provide them with more choices.
