There is a great story, "The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend", by Dan Santat that talks about how important it is that everyone has that "someone" to go to and do life with... This story will be read to 2nd and 3rd grade students and then they will be creating their own "friends". The students will engage in a planning stage to draw out what they want their friend to look like using an app on the iPads. Then students will use materials including felt, eyes, fabric glue and stuffing to create their imaginary friend. The students will "sew" their friends and then animate them using an app called Chatterpix. We will talk about the importance of being a friend and having people who you can go to when you may be feeling down, or lonely, or other emotions that are appropriate for 2nd and 3rd grade students. By creating a friend with felt, the students will always have "something" to go to when they may need to talk.
