Most of my students come from culturally and linguistically diverse households that are not represented nearly enough in mainstream curriculum. My students need books that are mirrors that allow them to see themselves and their own experiences. The events of the past few weeks have drastically affected our class discussions, and have demonstrated to me how even our youngest students need platforms to participate in discussions about current events. Now, more than ever, it is critical that our young students of color critically engage in issues surrounding racism, multiculturalism, and injustice, both past and present. Through this project, my hope is to foster a virtual summer social-emotional learning community centered around the culturally-sustaining texts on this list. Through grounding my lessons on these mentor texts, I hope to create a learning environment where my students can speak their minds, share their hopes and fears, and brainstorm possible solutions toward eliminating racism, discrimination, and injustice in our school community microsystem, and eventually in our society at large.
