Unfortunately, our school receives very little money to buy novels that are going to be interesting and connect with the student population I teach. Literally, I have three class sets of novels for my English class, which are high-level and very uninteresting for these students. Many of these students struggle with reading, and if it is a book that doesn't grab their attention or connects with them on a personal level, they check out. I need books to not only to help me develop a curriculum for these students, but to encourage students to read. I look at these as novels of equity because it will give students what they need and enable them to connect with a book, even though it is different from the classical books in a traditional setting. This is not a traditional setting. We look at what the students NEED, and then we try to make sure we find what we need to give them this. I am struggling with finding novels they can relate to because the regular high school's books don't meet the needs of these students and the lack of funding for our school doesn't allow me to purchase any. I believe these novels will change the way these students look at reading, and hopefully, I can instill the same love and passion I have for reading by using books they can connect to and are relevant to their life.
