My students will be thrilled as we chart the 21 day development cycle of chicks. Every student will get to select an egg to place in the incubator and each day we will chart the temperature and changes that are taking place. We will also do some fun activities to incorporate chicken vocabulary, parts of the egg, anatomy of the growing chicks, the effects of various solutions on (unfertilized) eggs, and learn about egg grading of eggs that are purchased in grocery stores. Our project will culminate on Day 21 when our chicks hatch and (with luck and good timing) students witness the amazing process of their tiny chicks breaking out of their shells and into their new (temporary), home in our classroom. For many students, this is the closest experience they will get to having a pet and learning to care for a tiny, new life. While this project is academically rich, it is also an impactful experience for students to enhance their sense of stewardship to animals and their environment.
