My students are taking advanced placement courses for the first time. One of the greatest struggles for students is not giving up when the learning gets hard. Although as teachers we provide them support for learning and remind them of deadlines, frequently students (especially those at low-income schools) throw in the towel instead of persevering. I want to read Angela Duckworth's Grit with my students so we can have meaningful conversations about how we work through difficult content and learning so we can be academically successful and life long learners. We will do this through a critical reading of the book Grit, deep conversations about what it means and how that impacts our lives. And then, we will talk about the practicality of grit and how we practice it.
