The other day, my students and I had and amazing in depth discussion about immigrants and immigration. And these are only 5th grades! At that moment I realized that at 10 years old, these kids were eager to understand the world around them on a deeper lever. They have a sense of wonder about how things work, and why some things are happening while others are not. Their curiosity has brought them to a place where they want to challenge themselves and their thinking. Through the use of Scholastic News, not only will students successfully learn reading and writing skills, but they will become intrinsically motivated to discuss current evens and topics that bring them wonder. Furthermore, reading and having structured classroom discussions will encourage students to become their own learners and will empower them to have courage and to form their own thoughts and opinions.
