One of the foundations of our aquatic science class is an emphasis on being advocates for our local community. This includes making sure the local environment is clean and free of debris. In years past our aquatic science classes have collected trash and spent the next 2 class periods turning that trash into art. This year we want to make an even bigger impact and clean up our local waterways. The waders are going to be used so that we can go to the bayou directly behind our school and remove trash (tires, chairs, etc.) that we've seen in previous visits. The fish tank parts will be used to replace our current aging supplies. Over the past few years the amount of working parts has been slowly diminishing. A big part of our class is setting up a fish tank into a well functioning ecosystem. The tanks are maintained throughout the year, allowing us to connect the importance of what we're learning in aquatics class to their own fish.
