While doing our Planet Food unit my students discovered one easy solution to reduce their ecological footprint was to compost our food scraps rather than throwing them away. Throwing them away adds to landfills and is wasteful. They have requested that we start composting here in our classroom with scraps from lunch. The AP Environmental Science students can use the ending product of the compost to fertilize the plants they grow showing how the cycle completes itself. It is important for students to believe they can be the change. I want to help them realize how easy it is to make a change in the world. By introducing them to composting, they can see that just by making one small modification to what they do everyday the impact creates a ripple much bigger than how it started.
