My students need to see themselves in the books they read, as well as learn the American stories they haven't yet been exposed to. As an educator of newcomer English language learners, I aim to foster a love of reading and learning in my students while teaching basic literacy. Our core curriculum does not provide students with texts that they can tackle on their own--nor does it include stories with people that look like them. I want to give my students a comfortable library with a diverse reading selection that will foster a passion for reading and an open mind.
