My students need to be able to easily interact with classmates, while respecting personal space. Additionally, personal comfort enhances the ability to stay focused and exercise self control. Having an inviting classroom rug helps students accomplish these objectives. Students are more readily able to respect their classmates personal space if they have a designated spot to sit. Also, a carpet such as this helps facilitate partner/group work. Students are able to turn their bodies to share their thinking with classmates, further developing their oral language skills as well as conceptual knowledge. Carpet space is developmentally appropriate for first grade students, and promotes an environment where students learn best.
