Our Spanish Dual Immersion students and teachers are true pioneers! We are developing a program in which learning the language and the culture has become an integrated learning experience. The program is building up from first grade and it just made it to Secondary school in our area.
One the essential goals of this program in which Spanish native speakers and English native speakers are together and mixed up in the classroom is creating and developing intercultural awareness. In such a diverse community, fostering cross-cultural relationships is very important for the program success. On the one hand, the Spanish-speaking students can sometimes feel frustrated or alienated in English monolingual classes or in contexts in which their background is unknown or not appreciated. We need to support and boost their self-esteem by recognizing that what they know and what they are is an asset. On the other hand, we also need to recognize the incredible effort, commitment and investment that learning a second language means for students from English-speaking background.
This is why we want to create a Spanish Dual Immersion club in our school and community that will be a great recognition for those students that have been in the program for 6-7 years now. Clothing in Spanish will make a big difference and will be our way to show to the rest of the school how great our program is!
