There is a lot of research in the education world that states if a child struggles with the English language, understanding key concepts to ensure they are successful is laborious, as well as frustrating. Bringing more hands on activities into the classroom will allow my students to have a level playing field as this will ensure they are engaged and will allow them to flourish. Many of the families I serve live below the poverty level therefore, basic necessities are the priority, which puts education and learning at the bottom of the list. I would like to be able to provide a sense of accomplishment to the students in my classroom. I plan to use provided manipulatives to bridge the gap brought on by academics as well as language. 1. Manipulatives are physical objects that are used as teaching tools to engage students in the hands-on learning of mathematics. They can be used to introduce, practice, or remediate a concept. 2. Using manipulatives along side traditional learning will help make abstract ideas concrete. 3. Math manipulatives build students' confidence by giving them a way to test and confirm their reasoning. 4. Finally, according to research done by Sutton and Krueger, manipulatives not only allow students to construct their own cognitive models for abstract mathematical ideas and processes, they also provide a common language with which to communicate these models to the teacher and other students. In addition to the ability of manipulatives to aid directly in the cognitive process, manipulatives have the additional advantage of engaging students and increasing both interest in and enjoyment of mathematics. Students who are presented with the opportunity to use manipulatives report that they are more interested in mathematics. Long-term interest in mathematics translates to increased mathematical ability.
