I am piloting the choice-based art education and “Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB)” partnership at my new school. C.H.O.I.C.E stands for “children having original, individualized, creative experiences”. In a TAB studio, students work with their own ideas and interests in a variety of different centers. The students have already wholeheartedly embraced this concept. They love having ownership of their ideas and creatively expressing themselves. I am the first permanent art teacher that this school has had in several years. Consequently, students’ art projects have been limited to mostly drawing, with some painting. This year, students will be exposed to sculpture for the first time in the “three-dimensional (3D) design center”. In this technology saturated world, students need the opportunity to work with their hands. The 3D design center is a student favorite where they can use their imaginations to build sculptures and create other “inventions”. Students will be using a lot of recycled items and I am looking to add supplies such as paint, colored tape and other non-recycled materials to allow them to create more finished pieces. Also, most of my students have never used clay and I hope to be able to add some to this center.
