One of the biggest challenges of working with re-engaged learners is providing access to grade level material in ways that can be understood by students with varying ability levels. In an effort to do this as a STEM teacher, I teach math, biology, Earth Science/physics, I do not dummy down my instruction but attempt to make the lesson easier to digest without compromising the subject. I also, attempt to visualize the lesson thus giving a more hands on experience and involvement in the classroom. I would like to implement a hydroponics self-contained ecosystem, aqua-garden, this is why I am applying for the grant. The aqua-garden is a self-sustaining aquarium and quadraphonic set-up for the classroom. The fish fertilize the plants, the plants clean the water for the fish. I will use a 10 gallon aquarium and grow a variety of veggies/herbs. These will of course be decorative and the perfect tool to explore how our natural environment works. But in addition to this, I have collaborated with a teacher that operates a “Green Smooth Tuesdays” she is introducing our students to a better and sustainable nutritional life-style. We will grow fresh herbs, such as mint and wheat grass, that can be added to the green smoothies as a healthy alternative to processed foods and no added pesticides in our aqua-garden
