One unit covered in earth science is earthquakes. After discussing the type of waves, how they travel, and triangulating the epicenter of an earthquake, students will get the chance to apply their knowledge and skills by completing the project shake-down. During this project, students will get to research structures that are earthquake resistant. Then students will build earthquake resistant structures. Next, students will test their earthquake resistant structures. Finally, students will reflect on the project. This project will provide real-world reasoning skills and application. Students need more projects that can give them skills they can use after high school. Missouri might not be a likely state to experience earthquakes, students will be one day securing shelter for themselves. This project will allow them to see what makes structures more secure.
