It can be difficult to create positive spaces for students. Try as we might to encourage positive self-talk and empathy, the negative thoughts and opinions that might be held about us throughout the building and beyond seep through. It is my hope that, by creating a space that looks physically different from these spaces will help us create a positive space for students to regain their positive and growth mindsets amidst it all. Part of that includes providing students choices for seating. Additionally, not all students can sit in a desk all day. Sometimes, they need to walk around. Sometimes, they need stretch out. Sometimes, they just need a change of scene. For these reasons, I am looking to implement flexible seating in my classroom. As a classroom with diverse needs, I have noticed that the whole class we work better when we can differentiate what we're doing based on what's going on today. Currently, that means some people can sit by the window with a clipboard, to get some space, while others can sit in the teacher's chair so they can feel empowered in their learning. However, that leave a good bit of the class who is still sitting in their desks, even when they need something else that day. It is for these reasons I am looking to include more flexible options in our classroom.
