Who wouldn't want to learn basic life-saving skills! Many of my students live with extended family members and are responsible for watching members of their family. By having the basic knowledge of CPR and the Heimlich maneuver I know it will give my students and their loved ones a sense of pride and confidence. As a Veteran, I've know basic life-saving skills and fortunately have never had to use them, but I know that if the situation would arise I would be prepared. I want to instill that knowledge and confidence in my students. We will first review PowerPoints and videos of CPR and other life-saving skills. The students will learn the Check Call Care procedure. After providing the students' knowledge on CPR they will put what they have learned into practice. After practicing the students will not only be assessed with a written assessment but also by performing CPR on the manikins following all the proper steps and performing it properly. My goal in the future is to invest in a practice AED machine to provide knowledge and practice as well. Even though my students won't "officially" be certified in CPR (or basic life-saving skills) I will still provide them with their "unofficial" certificate of excellence for completing basic life-saving skills. Again the pride and confidence knowing they have the knowledge and skills to help save a life is the 'official' certificate they will cherish forever.
