A boomwhacker is a lightweight, hollow, color-coded, plastic tube, tuned to a musical pitch by length. Boomwhackers are used as musical instruments in the percussion family. Boomwhackers produce musical tones when struck together, on the floor, or with a rhythm stick. They are a less expensive, and portable alternative to a xylophone. Boomwhackers are a great way for students to learn a variety of musical skills. The students will be able to play along to songs, play musical games with them, and create their own musical compositions. Boomwhackers also reinforce sight reading of music, since students can learn how to read music while playing along with the Boomwhackers. Additionally, they help to teach solfege, which is a musical system that promotes a better understanding of the relationship of musical notes. I know my students will learn so much from using them!
