I want to increase my students' experiences with their environment. These items will allow them to learn as they explore the classroom and meet their sensory needs.
Students with autism need sensory input as well as academic learning. The sensory chair is needed for two functions. First to prevent meltdowns by giving students a place to go into their own world and calm down if they are becoming overstimulated. Second, to give students that need the feeling of being constantly hugged a place to get that feeling so that they can participate in learning. The chewing toys will give students the oral stimulation that they need to focus on learning.
The classroom is broken up into learning centers. The light cube will be used in the Language arts/Math center to draw their attention with the color changing lights. Then the academic learning can take place using the translucent toys. The construction set will also be used in the math are to build spacial awareness and fine motor skills. The globe and alphabet animal toy will be used in the science/social studies area. The floor mat will be used in the art area so students can learn as they create in the floor.
