Current research has shown that students cannot learn if they are upset, anxious, distracted, or fearful. They need to calm down so that they can focus and learn. A calming room offers a place for students to distress, relax, release, and regroup. It can help them to regulate their emotions. Unfortunately, my school is in an older building that needs renovation. There is not enough space to create an actual calming room to help our students. Therefore, it would be ideal to change every classroom into a calming one. The items selected for our calming classrooms will allow us to create the atmosphere on a daily basis to help reduce the anxiety, stress and fear our students are experiencing each day because of the COVID pandemic. These calming classrooms should help them to focus on what they are in school for and that is to learn so that they will grow up and become productive citizens in our society.
