As a Physical Education Teacher, my project is to purchase new recess equipment. Play with this equipment will support students' social/emotional well-being and help them close their learning gaps. By purchasing diverse equipment from basketballs to juggling scarves, we intend to engage the unique interests of all our students and reduce discipline issues on the playground. These discipline issues take time away from recess play and also learning in the classroom due to administrative follow up. Students will increase global awareness and cultural sensitivity through parachute games as they learn about indigenous hunters being tossed in the air on blankets to look for wild game across the horizon. Chinese culture and history will be explored through the world of juggling. Bean bag play will take us into the cultures of Africa, Central America, Egypt, Greece and Rome. If there ever was a need for children to play, it is now. Research shows the following benefits of student participation in recess: -Improves students' social and emotional development -Improves student memory, attention, and concentration -Helps students to stay on-task in the classroom -Reduces disruptive behavior in the classroom -Increases students level of physical activity -Improves 21st Century Skills: collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity
