As research has shown, it is very important for students to read a variety of literature that includes both "mirrors" and "windows". Mirrors are texts that students can relate to closely because the characters and situations are much like their own, giving them a sort of literary mirror. Windows are texts that help the students see different experiences and cultures that they may not be exposed to, providing a window to the world. Through donations and goodwill finds, my shelves have plenty of windows for my students. But what my book shelves are lacking for them is books that they can relate to because many of the books available feature Caucasian characters. The majority of my students are students of color. Please help me give my students these much needed mirrors. As we do not have access to a library within the school, most of them are limited to what I can provide in my class.
