As a reading intervention teacher, the first thing I have to do is pinpoint the area a student is struggling in. Are they struggling with basic phonemic & phonological awareness (pre-reading skills), phonics skills, , sight word recognition, fluency, comprehension, or text structure. Once I have determined the area of need, I have to deliver the intervention. One of the most important things that determines whether an intervention is effective is the use of the right intervention to meet the student's needs. At my school, I currently do not have an intervention program to use with students. Instead, I am constantly looking for resources and pulling from various places, as well as creating my own materials for use. Having a research-proven reading intervention program to use with my students will ensure that they are receiving the instruction they need to help them be successful.
