Our class is 17 very active 3-5 yr olds. They all enjoy various activities on different days, but there is one common activity they all love, all of the time, gross motor time! Everyday when the students come in they ask, "Are we going outside or to the gym or to the hallway today?" Our school is located in a neighborhood where we regularly hear from parents, "I don't feel it's safe to let my kids go outside and play at home." Many of our students also live in apartment or condo like housing, so school is the only place that allows for students to engage in much needed gross motor activity for their age group. Not all families can afford or have schedules that allow for them to participate in extra curricular sports or our students are just too young to do so. It is important that we make sure students are getting this throughout their school experience, just as the older students would during their age appropriate physical education classes.
