When students are given the opportunity and tools to de-escalate and regulate their minds and bodies, they significantly increase their ability to learn and function in the classroom. The materials that I have requested will give me the ability to create a mobile "self-regulation station" in order to do all of the above, specifically focusing on the Zones of Regulation. The items that I have requested will allow students to access materials specific to emotion regulation. The Zones of Regulation is a specific approach used to teach students how to regulate their feelings and energy. The Zones categorizes the different ways we may feel by four color categories (green = ready to learn, blue = low states of alertness, yellow = heightened state of alertness, red = intense emotions). On the bookshelf I have requested, there will be a colored bin for each of the different zones. These bins will hold various sensory and coping tools affiliated with each colored zone. In addition, the bookshelf will include specific books to help educate students on emotion identification and regulation. I have specifically requested a bookshelf with wheels so that I have the ability to bring it to classrooms that may benefit from a whole class lesson. The goal of having this station is to allow students to access materials in order to regulate and return to a state in which they are ready to learn and can remain in the classroom. While they are accessing my station, I will be teaching them the necessary skills using the Zones of Regulation they need to gain independence in their own regulation.
