This year, the 6th grade teachers are striving to create a learning environment that is rich in problem solving and group discussion. We have just started a wonderful new math program that fosters mathematical literacy and productive mathematical discussions. During a typical math lesson, our students are given independent "think time" to think about the problems presented. They are then given time to discuss their answers and reasoning with their groups. We have additional discussions as a class. This requires the teachers to be very diligent about the pace and timing of the lesson. The product we selected are large digital timers that are magnetized. They can be placed on the whiteboard where the teacher and all students can see how much time they have left to discuss their reasoning. This effective tool will help to ensure that we are providing adequate time for students to engage in productive math discussions.
