We would love to have a turtle as our class pet but it will require some special equipment to keep the turtle happy and healthy. My plans for the turtle are to, most importantly, bring some nature into the classroom, but also to allow for scientific inquiry and learning responsibility. We will also use this as a segway to talk about keeping our environment clean and free of pollution and litter. A class pet is a great way for children to learn to be responsible for other living beings. They will take turns being the one who will help feed the turtle and let me know if the tank needs cleaned. The students will also get to watch as the turtle grows and develops. They will make predictions about how much the turtle will grow in the year and check its size monthly. I try to include as many different unique experiences for my students as possible. In the past I have had baby ducks and chicks in the classroom for the children to observe and its been one of their most memorable experiences in pre-k. I am hoping that a turtle can spark that same excitement and also become our new class mascot!
