The music instruments I am requesting for my students will help them have a true school experience. As a hospital/homebound teacher, my students do not have access to traditional classroom materials and experiences. In the homebound setting, students do not have instruments and come from low-income families that are not able to purchase instruments for them. When they choose a music elective, the class typically consists of watching online videos and using iPad applications in order to learn how to play the instrument of their choosing- yet they never have the chance to actually play it in real life. An application on a phone is not the same experience as truly feeling your fingers on a piano key or the power of a stroke on a guitar string. Students in the homebound setting are facing multiple disabilities and illnesses that can leave them feeling depressed, music is known to be therapeutic and helpful for mental health. A student with a disability such as autism, or a student experiencing chemotherapy can express themselves through music and use it as a healthy way to express their emotions during a difficult time. By donating you will be opening the doors to the magical world of music!
