Imagine traveling to other countries, sailing the sea, and blasting into outer space! Books provide opportunities to visit new worlds of adventure and excitement to students of all ages. My kindergarten students need a listening center! Helping our classroom with the funds for this technology would allow groups of students to listen to stories being read to them during literacy centers while they closely follow along with the words on the pages. As research-based best practices suggest, following along to stories read-aloud greatly improves students' reading as it models fluency, accuracy, and expression at a steady rate. It will also aid in listening comprehension as they can answer questions after hearing and reading along with the story. These components are crucial to engaging students in the adventures of texts. I love reading to my students! However, the experience of reading independently and getting lost in a great book is an experience each child should have! A listening center will allow them to develop their reading level, push them to grade level texts, and set them on a path for their future love of reading to grow.
