Our students loved reading Angie Thomas' "On the Come Up" and "The Hate You Give" is on the top of our student's wish list. Our goal is to increase literacy in our low-income community. We must start by exposing our children to books that are relatable to them. Themes such as social justice, police brutality, violence prevention, drugs and addiction are addressed. My students will use this great opportunity to not only reflect on these topics, but we will also discuss, debate, and reflect upon current events related to similar social injustices. Many of my students, will see this opportunity to read and discuss what they already know and see around them in their communities and for some, it will be an eye opening experience to the many injustices that still exist. This book will help to facilitate conversations to positively impact our community. Thank you in advance for your support for our students and our community.
