My first year teaching I put all of my desks together in groups. I changed this seating arrangement once. My students were never so unhappy or miserable. I like that my students are happy working together in groups, and sometimes my math and science lessons require partner or group work. I also believe that learning to work together on projects at a young age helps prepare students to be better collaborators in the upper grades and then in the workplace. I tell them we are a classroom family, and we all work together. But our desks aren't always agreeable with our family vibe. We have traditional desks that are put together. Sometimes though, our desks walk away from each other slightly as the students work leaving math tools falling onto the floor, and wasting valuable class time. It works, but tables would be better. Why marker top tables? We use dry erase boards very often for math. Not only do we use dry erase boards in whole group learning and projects, but it is a wonderful feeling when I see students grab their board and start working out problems they were struggling with. I can see how much they want to make sense of the problems. Their personal boards are also a bit small for partner lessons like drawing out open number lines or discovering the difference between units of measurement. Their boards cause a bit of clutter on their desks so marker top tables would allow students more room to work and collaborate than with traditional small dry erase boards (and what kid doesn't enjoy math a bit more when they can write on the furniture). Please consider helping me to improve our classroom home by replacing traditional desks with classroom family tables instead.
