I teach at an alternative high school. Many of my students come from troubled backgrounds that vary in circumstance. It is difficult to prioritize education when the basic need for survival is the center of each day. My goal is to draw interest to literacy and to help my students understand the importance of reading and writing. Novels such as The Postman and Fahrenheit 451 portray societies without an educated people. It is the right of my students to receive adequate education, but I want them to understand the significance and value of this right. We will read these stories in class.
