Sports participation is often perceived as the direct antithesis of education. However, this could not be further from the truth. It has been shown time and time again that participation in athletic endeavors can dramatically enhance academics as well as other outcomes. Not only do students have to meet certain academic standards just to participate, but they can also learn many other valuable skills and virtues through the sport itself. Aside from the many virtues that my students will learn from the sport, I also plan on making the wrestling season academic as well. Wrestling requires a lot of weight management as the students need to stay within certain weight classes. I will use this as an opportunity to teach my students many vital health and nutrition foundations. However, for any of this to be possible, we need the requested equipment. Although often revered as the most challenging of interscholastic sports, the great sport of wrestling is typically undervalued and misunderstood. It is both physically and mentally taxing while also requiring the absolute extremes of self-discipline. The students in my school would benefit immensely from the work ethic and discipline that the sport requires. Wrestling shoes, singlets, and headgear are a requirement if a school wishes to sponsor a team though. As stated previously, my students come from very low-income homes in a deeply urban section of Indianapolis. I have already assembled a roster of students that would benefit exceedingly from this sport, but they need your help. My school has never sponsored a wrestling team before and my students most likely will not be able to provide their own shoes, headgear, and singlets. With the equipment that I am requesting, my students will be able to truly achieve virtue on the mat.
