Our remote learning unit in art class for Fall 2020-21 will be focused on Visual Journaling, which is a self expressive medium that allows the creator to tell stories using text and images in a variety of art materials. This project will allow students to experiment with different artistic techniques and media; all incorporating creativity, craftsmanship and the Elements and Principles of Art and Design. Students will have a choice of themes: Where I Come From, Where I've Been, Where I Am, or Where I'm Going, which can be literal or more imaginative, providing an opportunity to tell a personal story, develop their own unique artistic voice, and learn formal elements of art in the process. This project also introduces a therapeutic process they can access at any time in their lives to explore ideas and express themselves. We will be creating an "altered book" visual journal, using repurposed books, mixed-found media like magazine cutouts, newspapers, old photographs or printed materials, as well as household items like ribbon, string, buttons, and anything that can be glued to a surface in an interesting way. These found materials have no cost, but additional drawing, painting and collage/adhesive materials are needed. Since our school is fully remote, the supplies at school intended for communal use, are not enough to provide individual kits to work at home. Students were provided pencils and a set of colored pencils at the start of the school year, and we can likely provide construction paper and glue sticks, but I am hoping to raise funds for paint kits and pastel crayons for each student. Thank you for helping our students bring their original artist books to life in full color!
