Children learn best when their heart is open and engaged! However, not every student's heart comes equally prepared to learn. Many students experience social and emotional struggles that overshadow academic learning. A Safe Place helps children let go of worries, anger, sadness, hunger, and confusion so they can connect with their teacher and peers, and open their mind to learning. A Safe Place is a quiet classroom where lights can be dimmed, and students come to "reset". Students are expected to participate in teacher-led activities to regulate emotions, reteach important social and emotional skills, and then make a plan for returning to the classroom ready to learn. Students may practice breathing skills, read a book about important social skills, talk with a trusted adult, work out their frustration with a sensory toy, listen to quiet music, and much more. A Safe Place makes a difference in student learning by teaching skills that strengthen emotional regulation and increase student resiliency in the classroom. Ultimately, students are more actively engaged in the learning process when conditions of the heart are addressed and cared for. The materials I have requested from Donors Choose will have a happy home in A Safe Place. The rug, floor lamps, and ocean wave projector will create a warm and inviting space for students that encourages calm thoughts and behavior. Students in crisis appreciate the opportunity to make choices, and the pillows will provide alternative seating options for students as they receive help and instruction. The book sets will be an integral part of reteaching and processing important social and emotional skills. Donors Choose will help make A Safe Place a more inviting and productive experience for all students at our school.
