I am fortunate enough to have a cart of Chromebooks for my classroom. As a result, I utilize these Chromebooks to enhance learning for my students. Often, my digital assignments include audio portions. If students don't have headphones and everyone is playing their audio at the same time, it becomes chaotic and hard to focus. It is already hard enough for eighth-graders to concentrate without the added distraction of multiple sounds playing! One student told me that when his classmates are all using the sound in their lessons (and don't have headphones), his brain feels like a computer with fifteen tabs open! In my Language Arts Class, students complete daily assignments on a reading instruction program (and it has sound that goes with it). Also, when students are conducting independent reading time or participating in book clubs, some students find it helpful to listen to the Audible version of the book while they read. Having the audio accessibility is a necessary modification for my students who have reading disabilities (some who read on a kindergarten level) and students who speak very little English. Because over half of my students come from economically disadvantaged families, many do not own headphones or earbuds. Obtaining a class set of headphones would allow me to continue to enhance my reading lessons with sound but it would cut out the chaotic noise that can be distracting to students.
